Since 1979, the Vail and Vickers Co., in conjunction with Multiple Use Managers (www.mumwildlife.com), has managed the hunting of Roosevelt Elk and Rocky Mountain mule deer on Santa Rosa Island. At over 82 square miles, Santa Rosa is the second largest of the 8 Channel Islands of the coast of southern California: slightly smaller than Santa Cruz and larger than Catalina.In 1929-30, about 30 elk and 30 mule deer were brought to Santa Rosa by the Vail family. the elk came from the Olympic Peninsula of Washington and the mule deer were brought in from the famed Kaibib Plateau of Arizona. With good feed and protection due to hundreds of large hills and valleys and no predators, the elk and deer have flourished for the benefit of hunters and hikers alike.Each year, the elk and deer populations must be kept in check, and those fortunate to book this hunt are able to return home with antlers, capes, meat, and memories. For this video, the on-camera hunters are Mike Pasaglia Sr. (trophy elk and trophy mule deer), Mike Pasaglia Jr. (trophy mule deer), Angeliquea Berg (management elk), William "Smitty" Smith (management elk and management mule deer), and Ken Wilson (management elk).

Hunting in Idaho, near the Wyoming border, with Warren Hicks of Pack n' Racks Outfitters, Ken Wilson shoots an excellent Shiras moose. Assistant guide Rob Wylie and Pack n' Racks horses and equipment are a big help for this high-country adventure.For his Idaho moose hunt with Warren Hicks, Lad Shunneson finds 18" of snow on the ground which was supposed to make his hunt easier. Wrangler Dale White assists, and Lad makes a long shot to succeed.Then Ken and Lad travel through Kuujjuaq in the arctic area of northern Quebec known as Nunavik, and hunt out of one of Safari Nordik's 35 camps. Thanks to a great staff and lots of caribou, each hunter shoots two caribou while struggling with quick decisions involving "tops,""" "bottoms,""" "shovels,""" "bezes,""" "palmation,""" "spread,""" and "Should I shoot this one or wait for a better one?"

In a 1948 article in TRUE magazine, Grancel Fitz first published the designation "Grand Slam" in reference to the successful hunting of the four indigenous North American wild sheep: the Dall, Stone, Desert, and Rocky Mountain. But there is another free-range North American sheep slam available to hunters consisting of Red Sheep, Armenian Mouflon, European Mouflon, and Aoudad. For Red Sheep and Armenian Mouflon, Jim Boulton hunts with Rowdy McBride on the famous Clayton Williams Ranch in West Texas. Then Ken Wilson travels to Hawaii to hunt pure European Mouflon on the big island with Gene Yap (whose young son, Matt, also shoots a good trophy in an exciting sequence). Walrus Muskox and Wolves

As you will see, the island of Newfoundland is home to the world's largest concentration of Eastern Canada Moose and Woodland Caribou. Hunting western Newfoundland with Don and Rod Stowe of Mobile Outfitters and their staff, three hunters (Johnny Burke, Lad Shunneson, and Ken Wilson) each take excellent specimens of Woodland Caribou in the bogs near Deer Lake. Then Shunneson, Wilson, and Steve McManus helicopter into Mobile Outfitters' remote tent camp for the moose hunt of a lifetime with each looking over numerous bulls before taking high-scoring trophies.

Alligator, Bison, Caribou 

From the Alaska coast to the B.C. coast, join a cadre of hunters sucessfully pursuing trophy Black Bears by spot and stalk with renowned hunt organizer Lad Shunneson. 

For muskox, Ken Wilson and Lad Shunneson fly from Yellowknife to Gjoa Haven on King William Island, just north of the arctic coast. Gjoa Haven is an Inuit Inuit of about 1000 named for Roald Amundsen's boar, Gjoa, after he spent two winters in Gjoa Haven before becoming the first explorer to traverse the Northwest Passage with their Inuit guides, Nuliayuk "Jack" Ameralik and Kanayok "Sam" Takkiruq , the hunters travel south, over frozen ocean and land, by kamotiks and snowmobiles to hunt barren ground muskox. Each take Boone & Crockett animals while surviving temperatures of 40 below in April.For caribou, Wilson and Shunneson fly out of Yellowknife in August with a group of hunters in a Twin Otter and land on Little Martin Lake in front of their camp. This time wooden skiffs with outboard motors are the form of transportation to the assigned hunting areas which are changed, counterclockwise around the lake, each day. Camp Manager Greg Major wisely assigns jack Ameralik to guide Wilson and Shunneson because he knows that Shunneson talks to much for most Inuits who are not already used to his shenanigans. Experience pays off as Wilson And Shunneson each take two Boone & Crockett central Canada barren ground caribou.

Mixed Bag... 5 species in 4 states with rifle, bow, and handgun. Follow along as Ken Wilson takes a Pope & Young Mountain Lion in southwestern Utah with Val Robb & Sons of Red Creek Outfitters. Then Roger Haley and Ken Wilson connect on record book Pronghorn Antelope in southern New Mexico with Pow Carter. Next, handgunner Don Myers turns down several 150-170 B & C class Whitetail bucks and it pays off when he bags a 210 point monster with Larry Grimland of Grimland's Whitetail Ranch in central Texas. Then to Arizona where Ken Wilson shoots a record book Black Bear in the early fall with his San Carlos Apache guide, Whitman Cassadore. Finally, Ken and Whitman team-up in the late fall for huge Rocky Mountain Elk with 58" main beams.

Safari through British Columbia starting with a hunt for Canada Moose in Northern B.C. with Stone Mountain Safaris, Ken Wilson packs into moose country with his guide, Marty Kjos, and they share several campfires before bagging a big Bull. Then Ken reviews the film of Tom Carmody's successful Stone Sheep hunt with outfitter Gary Moore where Tom picks out the biggest Ram in a group of six and rolls it down a shale mountainside with one shot. Finally, Ken flies into Prince George and travels to the southern end of the Finley Mountains in Central B.C. where he packs in for a Stone Sheep and Mountain Goat hunt with outfitter-guide Charlie Stricker. They hunt Goat, first, and pass up a 10" Nanny before dropping a 9' Billy in a spectacular sequence. Then they backpack for Sheep and look over a lot of Rams before shooting one "on top of the world."

On a late season hunt in the Yukon, Ken Wilson and Joel Wilkinson each shoot record book mountain caribou north of Watson Lake with Ceaser Lake Outfitters. Then, on an early season hunt in the Northwest Territories with N.W.T. Outfitters, all of the spectacular footage from Sportsmen On Film's highly regarded Hunting Dall Sheep and Caribou in the NWT is shown.

The Records of Exotics record book that Thompson Temple pioneered lists 10 animals that constitute the SUPER SLAM OF EXOTICS. They are the Fallow Deer, Aoudad, Field Stag, Corsican Sheep, Mouflon Sheep, Sika Deer, Ibex, Axis Deer, Blackbuck Antelope and Catalina Goat. 

In “Hunting the Exotics: Part One”, Ken Wilson, of Sportsmen on Film, hunts the first half of the SUPER SLAN and, with the help of some to the best exotic guides in the business (Lad Shunneson, L.V. Hubbard and Thompson Temple), he takes all gold medal trophies on-camera. What do there animals look like, how do they act, what constitutes a good trophy, and how are they hunted? All of those questions are answered in detail in the context of live exciting hunts filmed over a period of three months. 

In Part Two, Ken completes the SUPER SLAM by taking Sika Deer with Lad Shunneson, Ibex with Finn Aagaard, Catalina Goat with Mark Cowden, Axis Deer with Thompson Temple, and Blackbuck Antelope with Bo Wafford. Then he successfully hunts a second Catalina Goat (which in the new number one for SCI) and the great Corsican shown below; both with Thompson Temple.

Thanks to hunters' trophy fees, hundreds of ranchers are providing the land, personnel, and capital that has resulted in greater numbers of some species in North America than now exist in their original native habitat.
